Another headline writer bites the dust…

December 18, 2007 by

I seem to be hitting the jackpot lately on obscure or misleading headlines. Here’s one from the old grey lady (the New York Times) herself:

Rice in Baghdad as Tensions With Turkey Rise

First thought when I see this is, “Hmmmm. The Iraqis have a problem with eating some types of poultry (funny, I don’t remember the Koran mentioning turkey) so instead of Christmas turkey, all they have is rice.”

In reality, of course, the US Secretary of State is upset that Turkey’s dropping bombs on Kurds in northern Iraq (or rather that the PR doesn’t look so hot) and so has flown out to calm things down. (I’ve got a second clue for the headline writer: Once the bombs start falling and troops cross the border, I think we can dispense with the word “tensions” and go right to “conflict.”)

‘Tis the season, I guess.

    Step away from the papers.

    Go into the studio.

Get back to work on glass.

    Use LOTS of frit (sorry!).

Right now I’m screaming down a deadline to release a new blog for a client and get their newsletters integrated. I keep passing the studio and sighing–three Christmas presents to make before Christmas and I’m beginning to think I won’t make it. Not when one of them needs to be sent all the way to Virginia… (sigh) And that doesn’t even come CLOSE to working on two cast pieces that my brain’s obsessing over…or the other two that I’ve got to pick up so I can work on them.

And hey–I don’t take a single paper. I read my stuff online, like any protogeek.

Oh, so YOU have something to go to Virginia, too, eh? The Kid Sister in Alexandria more-or-less expects me to be late with my package. Good for me, though… I got HER gift out of the kiln yesterday.

Obsessing? I got the new Klaus Moje book last week and my mind has been full of ideas.

Yeh, online is fine. BUT… I do love curling up in the big blue loveseat in the morning with my cup of coffee and going through Science Tuesday in The NY Times.

Kid sister in Sterling, in fact. Overnighted it yesterday and considered the cost my fee for procrastination.

I like lingering over a paper and exploring…but I really, really hate picking up newspapers and dragging them out for recycling every week. And I’ve got an older cat that believes any newspaper within jumping distance was intended to be a litterbox. That’s accelerated my online newsreading considerably, at least in the house.

I liked the Moje book, too..right now, though, it’s the Seth Randal book that’s eating my brain.
