Press Club

  • Location: Southeast Clinton neighborhood
  • Price to fill up two people: $20 to $30
The crepe looked like an envelope pie and was stuffed with a savory mixture of cheese, portobello mushroom, and spinach. I was told (by the mouth chewing on it) that it was pretty good and, indeed, there was something seductive about the thin-skinned square pie with squelchy Tuscan fillings.

I was there with members of the Oregon Glass Guild’s casting demo weekend, and we’d stopped in for lunch. Gary and Donnie got the crepes; I tried a basil and tomato sandwich on a crusty baguette with provolone cheese. Very tasty.

In fact, it was tasty enough that after the demo ended on Sunday we headed back there for dinner. Press Club is, first and foremost, a wine bar, and most of our party for eight tried some vintage or other. The food’s sorta Italian Northwestern, meant for nibbles or lighter appetites, and the server recommended the bean and chicken soup, which was a hit. I chose soup and antipasto, and it was exactly right after a busy weekend.

The Press Club has only a few small tables and one long table by the bar (with really comfortable leather benches). There’s a large selection of magazines on wall racks (which you’re welcome to read while dining/sipping, as long as you treat them gently), and intriguing art on the walls. It certainly holds its own in the dining-rich Clinton/Hawthorne neck of the woods.

Tip: The kitchen here is tiny (according to the waitstaff), and larger parties wanting salad and dinner may be served in relays.
