Mammarian musings
July 24, 2008
(Warning: Squeamish waters ahead if you’re the type who avoids intimate girl gabs)
They say a skillful beater can pound and pound on an ounce of pure gold until it’s so thin that it can cover an entire church dome.
Obviously, they borrowed that concept for mammograms.
“Are you trying to cover the whole damn cathedral?” I gasped, through gritted teeth. The mammo technician checked the current state of my breast as it tried to spread molecularly thin between two flat plates. “Not quite thin enough,” she grinned and impishly cranked some more.
My breast closely resembled a cheese pizza. Thin crust. [Read more]
Glassists, and all that
July 24, 2008
You know what I love about the glass community? They’re so bloody generous.
As I’ve said ad nauseum, my kiln died. (Well, c’maaaaaaan–that kiln’s been a constant companion for the last five years. Not having one handy is almost as unsettling as losing a mobile phone, which probably says something about my gadget jones.)
Within hours of making this announcement, I had offers from other glassists to use their kilns until I could find another, and took one up on it (thanks, Bob). Now I’ve got kilns lined up for my next three casting sessions (which need deeper kilns than Bob’s). The biggest problem I face–well, two biggest problems–are (a) finishing up the molds and charging them appropriately and (b) getting the molds across town without damage.
So as I tally up the last specs on the Intelligent Kiln Project (IKP) and get ready to start building (Correction: take a massive deposit out of the bank and get the kilngod started on my kiln), it’s nice that I’m not going to be completely glassless for the next two months.
Whew. And thanks, everyone.
BTW, I’ve decided it’s time to get the dratted garage studio project going, too. No sense in bringing IKP home to a grubby garage. This way I’ll have a clean studio for sculpting, packing and assemblage, and a nice new “dirty” studio for waxing, burning out, firing and coldworking. (happy sigh)
So I’ve got two months. Yeeeehah!
