Everyday design by Nathan

March 26, 2008 by cynthia

Ran across a really interesting blog, Commonsense Design. It’s by an old friend, Nathan Zeldes, and I highly recommend popping over to take a peek.

Nathan’s a principal engineer at Intel, and a very smart guy. (and apologies, Nathan, if your title has changed and I missed it) He’s often a voice of reason around Intel, poking at all those safe and sensible corporate decisions that actually make it harder to get work done.

(For example, Nathan famously questioned the idea that employees shouldn’t be allowed to access the Internet at work and, according to a fellow who was CIO at the time, was instrumental in getting that ban lifted. Whole thing sounds dumb now–thank heavens it was over by the time I got there–but a decade ago, it was a real about-face for a large corporation.)

Anyway, when Nathan’s in town (he’s based in Israel), I enjoy talking with him. Get him off in a corner for 30 minutes, and you’ll be treated to a wide range of topics, from his latest fractal imaging program, to an intriguing wireless problem, to a better way to position cafeteria signs.

His blog’s kinda like that too. It looks at how we design everyday objects like remote control devices, cardboard boxes and safety pins. It made me think, and I enjoyed it thoroughly.

 Take a look…

Well thanks a lot. Again. You have once more reduced my productivity. Commonsense Design is now No. 3 on my cycle of Things To Read.

(BTW… I like the running banner on your New and Improved Blog. Geez… it’s almost like you’re a design and layout person or something…)

Glad I could be of service, Gary. Anything I can do to help… ;-)

And thanks on the blog comment. At the moment I’m snatching moments to get the pictures back in the posts, break out my solid block of restaurant reviews into something people can read, and figure out where/how I’m going to bring the rest of the site back, but that banner was a fun break.
