Moving sentiment

Ever wondered where this blog went? Me, too. My old hosting service had an uptime of somewhere around 85 percent. Then it started eating e-mails, and that was pretty much that.

It was time to move.

Now, I’d had a new hosting service (Dreamhost) for more than a year, most of the smaller domains over here, but the thought of migrating this one, disrupting mail, shifting the blog (again–I moved it back in 2006, too), etc…ugh. Kept putting it off.

Yesterday I finally set up the domain on Dreamhost, flipped the DNS servers and transferred the registry, began porting…just as Dreamhost took every bloody server down. Apparently they were moving datacenters last night, and decided it was sufficient to simply mention it on their blog (which I didn’t know existed). Dreamhost is very inexpensive for what you get…minus customer notification, I suppose.

Came back online this morning, uploaded a hold page and began migrating blogposts and comments. Took about 15 minutes. I exported the whole blog in Movable Type, imported it into the new WordPress blog, comments and all.

Well, almost all.

Turns out the graphics don’t move across. You’ve probably noticed I like to add photos. Lots of photos. WordPress makes them relatively easy to upload and stick back into the right spots, but so far I haven’t found a batch upload utility for WordPress that can do the same thing. Consequently, I’m going back into the post and re-uploading graphics and other binaries. And discovering that any internal blog referrals (such as “read this post I made last week-link”) are also dead.

At the rate I’m going, I figure I’ll have everything back in place in, oh, June.

For the time being–I’m swamped with dayjob stuff–I’m going to let the blog serve as the site. That’ll give me time to do some redesigning, build out a couple things I’ve had in mind, and slowly reorg the site. This isn’t the final blog design, not by a longshot. It’s more of a parking garage to let me shift and organize and catch my breath.

Whew. Anybody got any ideas for what they want to see on this thing, let me know. Cheers.

As long as you’re back online, Cynthia… you do have a tendency to disappear on us! Welcome back.

BTW, I finally got around to starting a blog (mine, not for work) – take a look: http://designblog.nzeldes.com

Yeah, I experiment too much and tend to bring my whole digital world crashing down around my ears on a fairly regular basis….sigh
