iPhone, bathtubs and blogging

bathHowever useful Gigi-the-iPhone may be, she has some limitations. For one thing, she’s not really a great companion in the bath (although I’ve been surprised at the quality of pictures she takes, even there–left).

Gigi and water don’t mix. In fact, the first thing that the Apple tech did when I brought Gigi in was to open her case and check to see if water had gotten in.

Apparently every iPhone comes with a wet indicator, some kind of reactive paper that changes color permanently if it gets wet. If it does, the tech said, “it voids your warranty and we can’t fix it.”

Gigi has become my repository for music, videos, animations and games. She helps me answer email, find restaurants and theatres, show off my sculpture portfolio by flipping through her pate de verre album and keep up with news, weather and the markets.

And I very much enjoy reading books on Gigi using the Amazon Kindle app. It’s quite handy to pick from six or seven books in your pocket when you’re facing a long wait. If Gigi had any battery life to speak of she’d be great on transoceanic flights.

But when the book you’re reading is on the iPhone, you can’t exactly run a steamy hot bubblebath in your lovely soaking tub and spent a moistly fragrant hour reading.

And although the folks at Automattic have added new features to their WordPress app for iPhone–it lets you type in landscape mode, add pictures and do a rudimentary publish all from Gigi–blogging with Gigi is more frustration than convenience.

I wrote this post on Gigi last night, in the bathtub, while shooting the image above and trying to shave the other leg. I don’t recommend it as a relaxing experience.

More to the point, even though I could have published it last night, the blogpost needed more editing and refinement than Gigi could manage. (For one thing, the WordPress app has a bug that flips photos upside down when you add them) So I don’t think blogging is in Gigi’s immediate future.

Thank heavens there’s still something I’d rather do on a computer (and in the tub).
