Ribbonfest: Candace Kling

June 12, 2009 by cynthia

Ribbons ain’t art, plain and simple. Ribbons go in little girls’ hair, hold up medals on the chests of heroic soldiers, decorate the frilly skirts of Swiss yodelers and square dancers. They’re there to be shiny, cover up mistakes in sewing and ensure that the band uniforms are, well, uniform.

Or are they?

Scooshing around on the Web tonight, I came across Candace Kling’s website and yet another proof that the medium does not determine the art. Ms. Kling paints and sculpts with ribbons, creating some gorgeously goofy and sometimes thought-provoking art. This one, for example, is entitled “Massacre at Bridal Veil Falls:”

And I dig her box of chocolates. As Mr. Gump said, you never know just what you’re gonna get. ;-)
