I too called AMEX, but must have spoken to a different person. The answer I got was, "The statement was sent just to confirm that your account is cancelled." Nowhere on the statement did it say "Cancelled". Oh well... maybe they got enough annoying phone calls to stop things like that from happening in the future. On the other hand, probably not! They immediately wrote a check and took off to Hong Kong. The bank recovered $1.7 mil and the authorities are looking for them and the balance now! I had an attorney friend once say that if you are going to do a crime make sure the amount is enough to justify the punishment if you get caught, this must have qualified for this couple.
