Five-finger revisited, part II

2020-02-10T15:59:39-08:00

Oh...referring to the four tackfuse exercises I did this week, I posted the basket (thanks, Gary, I was trying to figure out what to call these things). So just to clear up a couple of e-mail queries, here's what the other three looked like. Apologies for the quality of the photos--I just snapped these in the kitchen. Arrowneous. This was [...]

Five finger exercises, revisited

2020-02-10T15:58:40-08:00

Realized last week that between visitors, cool events like BeCON, losing Chinni and dayjob pressures I HADN'T SO MUCH AS RUN A GLASS SCORE IN ALMOST THREE MONTHS. That's gotta be some kind of record, and it probably explained the nervous twitch in my brain. (Although my wallet keeps sending sincere thanks for the sudden cessation of glass expenditures) Anyway, [...]

My top 20 frit colors

2016-05-16T01:12:20-07:00

I'm thinking of this now because somebody asked me what I'd recommend to stock a new studio with an adequate supply of frit. My first impulse was to suggest that such a question was rather like asking which letters to buy for your laptop keyboard. Then I got to thinking about it, and it really is a good question. Not sure it has an answer, but it's still a good question.

Snow job

2020-03-02T07:43:08-08:00

There's an article in TIME Magazine reporting on the latest hot controversy: Should aging, i.e., senior, women dye their hair? Apparently senior women should be ashamed of "not being honest" if they don't let all the grey hang out.Anybody else (I suppose we could call them "junior women," as if they're still in training to be women) can color hair with abandon. Awwwwwwww.... c'maaan. Anyone who believes this should be a controversy has too much time on their hands.

I have a cat. His name is ChinnChinn.

2016-05-18T15:01:28-07:00

I have a cat. His name is ChinnChinn. And that doesn't begin to tell the story. I'm starting this now because sometime pretty soon I must change the tense in that last paragraph: I had a cat. His name was ChinnChinn. Barring another miracle, of course.

I don’t light up my life, it seems

2016-05-16T01:01:59-07:00

So I haven't made ANY glass, or molds, or models, or pretty much anything relating to glass for at least three weeks. I wonder if you can get the glass DTs?

Whole Foods

2017-07-30T14:44:06-07:00

Website  Area: All over Portland/Vancouver (I did the one in the Pearl) Price for two to fill up: $16-$20 The corporate organic grocery store, Whole Foods, is an old lunch standby for many people, and I'll grab a bite there when I'm in the Pearl District and need to pick up some groceries, but I gotta say it doesn't hold [...]

Making light of glass

2015-02-03T17:59:40-08:00

A very prominent glass sculptor once told me she's noticed that as she gets older her glass sculptures are getting smaller and smaller. "By the time I'm 65 I'll be down to making pendants," she snorted.

Which came first? The red cross or…the Red Cross?

2020-03-02T07:44:53-08:00

So Johnson & Johnson, a family company, is suing the American Red Cross for trademark infringement of its red cross. This oughta be fun. 112 years ago ARC founder Clara Barton (apparently unwisely) agreed that J&J had exclusive rights to use a red cross to sell bandaids and first aid kits and the like. Now the Red Cross has gotten [...]
